Celebrate Pi(e) Day With Crafts!

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

March 14th might just be my favorite holiday.  No, it’s not St. Patrick’s Day or Easter… it’s a much more obscure holiday, but one that’s near and dear to my heart.  You see, today is Pi Day, a holiday celebrating the mathematical constant Π (pi), which equates to roughly 3.14 (or March 14th).  I guess it’s my inner math geek that appreciates this nerdy holiday, but even if you aren’t fond of equations, you can still appreciate this day because one of the most popular ways of celebrating is to make and eat pie.  And who doesn’t love pie?!

Since we’re all about crafting here, I thought I’d share some fun dessert-themed DIY projects in honor of Pi Day.  So even if you’re watching your diet, you can still enjoy Pi Day by making one of these calorie-free concoctions!

piece o cherry Celebrate Pi(e) Day With Crafts! This free knitting pattern for a Piece of Cherry Pie looks good enough to eat even though it’s made from yarn!  Get out your knitting needles and start working on some red bobbles for your pie filling now! This yummy knit pie would be cute kitchen decoration or a fun birthday gift for someone with a sweet tooth, don’t you think?

Sew Pie1 300x290 Celebrate Pi(e) Day With Crafts! For those of you not into knitting, this Sweet Cherry Pie is another great crafty dessert option. Stitched from felt and topped with red wool felt balls for cherries, this delectable dessert will have you drooling from the moment you start sewing! The best part about these fabric pie crafts is they last forever so after you spend the afternoon making them, you can enjoy them for years to come!

cherry cupcake Celebrate Pi(e) Day With Crafts! Okay, so it’s not quite a pie, but this Crochet Cherry Cupcake pattern was too irresistible not to include!  This is an easy crochet pattern for beginners and also gives you the option of sewing the pieces together or not.  If you don’t stitch your cupcake shut you can fill the inside with candy for a fun and tasty surprise!

If you’d rather eat pie than make it out of craft supplies, I’ve also got some ideas for you!  I just rounded up some great pie-related items that I think every kitchen needs.  First off, the Pillsbury Easy as Pie cookbook has 140 mouthwatering pie recipes, all of which are super easy to make using refrigerated pie crust. Find every pie imaginable in this expansive recipe collection; you’ll never need to search online for a pie recipe again!

Then there’s this fun Whoopie Pie Pan, made specifically for baking everyone’s favorite fluffy dessert!  If you love whoopie pies, this pan is a must-have!  And then to go along with your whoopie pie pan, you’ll of course need this exciting Whoopie Pies cookbook!  Inside you’ll find a dozen mix and match recipes for baking, creaming and assembling whoopie pies. It’s so much fun putting together your own pillowy-soft, cake-y creations and choosing your favorite combinations of flavors. Making some of the recipes from this whoopie pie collection would be a really great kids’ party idea or a unique activity for a girls’ night in!

The Presidential Treatment: Patriotic Craft Ideas

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

I have to admit, I’ve never paid much attention to Presidents’ Day.  It’s not that I’m not patriotic, it’s just that I never knew quite how to celebrate it.  For years I just thought of it as an extra day off of work or school and a day when I couldn’t mail things at the post office.

Recently though I’ve discovered that almost any holiday can be celebrated through crafts — even the most minor ones like Groundhog’s Day!  So, as a curious crafter, I decided to check out what sorts of Presidents’ Day crafts I could unearth and let me tell you, I was pretty shocked by the plethora of projects that came up with a simple Google search!

First I found a bunch of cute crafts to make with the kids.  After all, Presidents’ Day is one of the more educational holidays we celebrate as Americans.  I absolutely love this George Washington craft made from paper plates, courtesy of The First Grade Parade!  Don’t you think it’s so cute?!

George Washington Craft The Presidential Treatment: Patriotic Craft Ideas

I also came across these Mini President Figurines from JulieInCharge.  Check out her tutorial to see how they’re made!

Mini President Figurines The Presidential Treatment: Patriotic Craft Ideas

Since I don’t have any kids of my own, I was really looking for a more, shall we say “adult” way of crafting for the holiday.  That’s when I decided that I didn’t need to be so literal about the whole “Presidents’ Day crafting” thing.  Why not just make some cute, patriotic, red-white-and-blue decorations for my house?  Yeah, that’ll do!

So, here’s what I came up with.  I need to get going on these since President’s Day is just a few short days away.  But, the good news is that I can re-use these patriotic crafts again for Memorial Day and the Fourth of July down the road.  And of course I’ll bring them out once again for Labor Day in the fall.  Don’t you love a good decoration you can use again and again?!

If you like to make patriotic decorations for your home, I hope some of the ideas above have inspired you.  I’ve also rounded up some fun red white and blue craft supplies that I’m definitely adding to my stash!  With so many patriotic holidays, these are all going to come in handy!

Crafting for Christmas: A Great Way to Get in the Spirit

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

You know it’s coming. Can you feel it in the air yet? I am started to smell snow and see sparkly lights everywhere. All this Christmas cheer has really been getting me in the Christmas crafting spirit lately. It’s hard to really get into Christmas time if your house still just looks like your house, except with a big green spruce in the middle. As much as I love my Christmas tree, I need other holiday decor to really make it feel like Christmas is coming. Of course, for the sake of my husband, I don’t want the decor to be overwhelming either. That’s why I love the selection of Christmas trinkets on CutRateCrafts!

In the era of texting and emails, I know it can sometimes be unusual to receive handwritten notes, but call me old-fashioned I love them. Nothing makes me happier than leaving my husband a good morning note before I leave for work. What can make that better? Cute holiday paper to remind him just how much I love Christmas. And you know what, he likes it too (or at least that’s what he tells me). This cute paper is just what I need. I love the non-traditional Christmas color scheme.

Handmade Gifts to Warm the Heart and Hands and Head…

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

We all know the Holidays can be a stressful time of year if you let it. Well, don’t let it! Once we start letting all the stress of decorating, cooking, and buying get in the way we start to forget what the holiday season is really about. Giving and showing one another that we care should always be the first things occupying our minds. I really don’t think that there is a better way to show someone you care than by giving them something that you slaved over making specifically for them. Okay, maybe you didn’t slave, but you still put thought and heart into it right?

If you think your loved ones are tired of getting handmade hats, scarves, and mittens, here’s a handmade holiday gift collection to spark some inspiration and perhaps get you out of a holiday zombie creative funk.

Quilts

Okay, okay, I know what you’re thinking. “You expect me to make a quilt in between all the Christmas madness?” No, I’m not insane. How about a quilted iPod case?  A quilted pillow? What about a couple cute and simple quilted bags? CutRateCrafts.com has the fun book of quilted pot holder patterns, any of which would make a great gift. See? You can still quilt for the holidays.

Knit and Crochet

Here’s an area of the body that often gets forgotten during the holidays: the feet! With knee-high chunky boot socks being a popular trend, you could easily knit or crochet some cute chunky socks or leg warmers for those pesky, hard-to-buy-for teenage girls. Don’t forget you can knit bracelets and crochet necklaces to give to your loved ones as well! Besides, with all the wonderful colors of yarn to choose from for this season, anyone would appreciate getting a brightly colored scarf or hat to break out of that dullness of black and grey that accompanies winter outerwear. Some of my favorites:

Sewn Gifts

This one has to be obvious for sewers out there. Aprons are my favorite gift to give each year. One lucky member of my family gets a new one each year and then I rotate through the list. By the time I come back to the first person I gave an apron to, they’re in desperate need of one! Genius huh? I guess this is only a handy idea for a family of cooks. If you do have a family of cooks, what about some fun dish towels or coasters?Add an extra special touch to anything you make with some adorable buttons that speak to the recipient’s personality.

Of course, there are tons of other fun Christmas gifts to make, but I hope these got your creative wheels spinning! What do you usually make for your family for the holidays?

Christmas Cookie Traditions

Monday, November 28th, 2011

In my family, gathering to bake Christmas cookies is an almost religious tradition. Every year, I meet my cousins, my aunt, my mother, and my grandmother to bake a ridiculous amount of sugar cookies and decorate them with colored glazes made from lemon juice and powdered sugar. As children, my cousins and I looked forward to our annual Christmas cookie baking nearly as much as we anticipated opening presents on Christmas morning. We spent an entire afternoon eating copious amounts of sugar glaze off of paintbrushes; how could we not love it?

436373 main Christmas Cookie TraditionsThe recipe for our family Christmas cookies is very simple. Any plain sugar cookie dough will do (we’re European, so we always prefer a dough with plenty of butter), and the sugar glaze is something we mix up from fresh-squeezed lemon juice, powdered sugar, and food coloring. It’s the decorating that really makes these cookies special. We use cookie cutters to make cookies in the shapes of Christmas trees, gingerbread men, angels, stars, snowmen, bells, and candy canes. The young children are essentially given free reign when it comes to decoration, so we have plenty of cookies that look like zombies or vomit. It’s alright because they all taste the same, and there’s a certain sense of freedom that comes with eating a monster Christmas cookie, especially in comparison with cookies decorated by the adults in my family. The women in my family are German, and they fit almost every implication of the stereotype. My mother, aunt, and grandmother are all impeccable decorators, and among them they establish an accepted color scheme and design for each shape of cookie. They then set up an assembly line by which cookies are decorated with amazing efficiency and uniformity.

436767 main Christmas Cookie TraditionsI don’t particularly like most of the cookies we make for Christmas (notice there’s no chocolate to be found?), but I’d rather have those than any other treats around the holidays. Not only are they homemade, but they’re made with family, and with an incredibly deep sense of tradition. Making Christmas cookies together is a tradition in many families, but if it isn’t in your family, you can start a new tradition this Christmas! The first thing to start with is a basic collection of Christmas cookie cutters. Christmas trees, gingerbread men,  and other Christmas shapes are always good bets for the holiday season, but if you would like to bake for friends who don’t celebrate Christmas (or for secular events, like school holiday parties), mittens and snowflakes offer a non-denominational alternative. Like my family, you can use toothpicks, new paintbrushes, and spoons to decorate cookies, or use a cookie decorating set for more precision. A pastry bag will allow you to make 3-dimensional designs with frosting, while cookie stencils make decorating with sprinkles and sugars much easier.

156226 main Christmas Cookie TraditionsIn my home, Christmas cookies don’t last long enough to share with friends (guilty!), so we just keep them in tins and tupperware containers separated by parchment paper. But if you plan to share Christmas cookies with friends and neighbors, package them in pretty compartmentalized boxes that look almost professional!

Joy to the World: The Christmas Crafts Have Come!

Monday, November 14th, 2011

I remember when the Christmas crafts first started trickling in last July. I was still taking my daily walk in the blazing heat on my lunch break and furiously crocheting a star-spangled banner tanktop. Although the most diligent crafters had already begun planning for the holidays, it seemed unlikely that Christmas would ever come! But now I am happy to announce that Christmas is here, in full force. I’ve heard the first carols of the season sung on the radio (and immediately switched them off because I don’t believe in starting Christmas music before Thanksgiving is over), and we’re already making plans for visiting relatives for the holidays. But the most significant sign of Christmas is the profusion of Christmas crafts in our weekly CutRateCrafts e-mail newsletter. When I read through this newsletter, I feel like I’m in Whoville, looking forward to Christmas all year round!

Since I know that we all have our favorite Christmas motifs (angels, Santa Claus, reindeer, snowflakes, candy canes, etc.), I decided to highlight products that feature one of your favorite Christmas characters, Frosty the Snowman! Enjoy!

Put it on Paper: Cherish Your Holiday Memories

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and you know what that means.  Family, friends, food… and photos.  It just wouldn’t be a holiday if there wasn’t someone busily clicking away with their camera.  At my house we have a designated time where we all get together and take posed pictures of everyone gathered together.  These photo sessions usually take place before the meal, and for good reason. Otherwise we’d all be slopping covered in mashed potato remains and Uncle Joe would have that “food coma” look on his face that he always gets after our Thanksgiving feast.

When I was younger I used to dread these photo sessions.  Why did we have to stand awkwardly together and smile for the camera when all we really wanted to do was dig into the stuffing and pumpkin pie?

Now that I’m older, I get it.  Photos are a way of making memories more concrete.  Sure we can always think back to that time when Aunt Sally burned the cornbread and almost set the house on fire… or the time when we dressed our baby cousin George in this ridiculous turkey costume, but without pictures these stories are just thoughts swimming around in our heads.  Photos are a way we can share our holiday stories with each other and make our memories more lasting.

This is how and why I became such a huge fan of scrapbooking.  Not only was this a great place to put all of my photos, it also allowed me to get creative and design different layouts, use cute patterned papers and add fun accents like stickers, stamps and so many other decorations!  Now I make a scrapbook for almost every occasion — I have one for my trip to France, one for my baby niece’s first year, I gave one to my mom for her birthday full of photos of her and me through the years… I literally have dozens of scrapbooks sitting on my bookshelf!
