Young at Heart with Rainbow Patterns

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

When I think of rainbows, I recall memories of being a six-year-old kid with an arm covered in bright jelly bracelets, school folders with rainbow designs by Lisa Frank, and a giant shoe box of crayons with every color imaginable. And I will never forget Rainbow Brite. She was essentially the queen of colors.

Rainbow Pencil Case Young at Heart with Rainbow PatternsHopefully rainbows bring back happy memories for you too. Today, I’m taking a look at projects that are all about rainbow patterns. Spring is coming up and it’s the best time to bust out some colorful crafts. CutRateCrafts.com has plenty of rainbow projects and supplies.

Grab some needles and hooks and pick out an array of yarn to whip up some knitted and crocheted rainbow patterns. I absolutely love this Crayon Colored Afghan which would be perfect for a little girl’s room or a guest bed in your home. If you want to carry a bit of the happiness with you to school or the office, work up this Rainbow Pencil Case or Entrelac Rainbow Mitts.

Try making a rainbow with tie dye! Maybe you did this craft at summer camp or in a group when you were a kid. There’s no reason not to paint your clothes (no matter what your mom says), and with a little effort you can have some pretty outcomes. Tulip makes tons of fun paints that you can use. Create a darling Tie Dye Dress or Rainbow Top as a treat to yourself. Fido can even get in on the fun with this Dog Bandanna.

There are a lot of crafts you can create on your own with buttons and paper. Make a colorful collage using a mess of buttons. Paper and felt are fantastic materials to create decorations. Bring some color to a kid’s room or crafting area by hanging up homemade garland. This adorable Rainbow Clover Garland was actually made from paint chips, but you could always craft a similar project from different materials.

You don’t have to be a kid to love rainbows, but being young at heart definitely helps! Use your imagination and make some rainbow crafts today.

What is the coolest rainbow patterned thing you have owned or own?

Editors’ Picks and Ideas

Monday, June 6th, 2011

This weekend, the editors of our sister sites all chose some of their favorite products from CutRateCrafts and included them in their e-mail newsletters. Our FaveCrafts editor, Karisa, created a collection of some of the products she found on CutRateCrafts, just in case you missed the newsletter.

A lot of the products in this collection are beautiful, quirky, or fun all on their own, but you might not know what to do with all of them unless you’re the crafting equivalent of Wonder Woman (and really, do any of us have the time to be that awesome?). But don’t worry! I’ve gone through Karisa’s list of products and picked out some FaveCrafts projects you can make using these products. Get inspired!

448950 main Editors Picks and IdeasScalloped Eyelet Baking Cups – Don’t fill these baking cups with mediocre cupcakes in generic canned frosting. Get out your spatula and watch this video on Easy and Elegant Cupcake Decorating to frost beautiful cupcakes that will do these baking cups justice.

360600 main Editors Picks and IdeasBazzill Decorative Brackets – I loved these curly, swirly chipboard brackets when I first saw them, but I had no idea how to show them off. Why not make a Mini Journal and decorate the cover with these beautiful brackets?

Craft Keepers Jars – The description for this product says these jars are for organizing your craft supplies, but we crafters know that jars are useful for so much more! Fill these jars with Amazing and Edible Chocolate Body Scrub or make Journal Jars for all your inspirational thoughts!

Easy Wrap Pom Pom Maker – This tool comes in handy for your cool-weather knitting and crochet projects (which you should be starting on soon if you’re on top of things…unlike me who is still finishing the wool jacket she started last summer.) Because this pom pom maker comes in all different sizes, you can use it for all sorts of different projects, including the Simply Adorable Baby Hat, the Crochet Santa Hat, or the Orange and Blue Crochet Slippers (and I confess I only mentioned the slippers for all my fellow crafting Illini!)

429019 main Editors Picks and IdeasFavorite Findings Lace Treasures Buttons – There are oodles of things you can make with these darling buttons (try adding them to handmade cards for antique charm!), but to me, they’re perfect for lacy cardigans like the Breezy Shawl, the Cropped Lacy Cardigan, or the Deep-V Flourish Sweater Jacket.

Pine French Provincial Signboard – When I was young, my mother would buy wooden plaques like these and paint them freehand as wall hangings all the time. That’s great if you’re a talented painter, but for those who are a bit more artistically challenged (like me), try painting with stencils or woodburning. Check out a few of these woodburning projects for inspiration: Easy Woodburned Tulip Plaque or the Woodburned Family Tree.

477844 main Editors Picks and IdeasSoiree Printed Tissue Paper – This elegant printed tissue paper is almost too pretty for craft projects! To really show it off, choose a tissue paper craft that will highlight the beauty of this print. Try making a Bright Colored Bangle without the napkin cutouts or decoupage a bench or other wooden item.

I know all you crafters have some great ideas for these products too! Which products are your favorites, and what would you make with them?

Knitting Sweaters from the Top Down

Friday, May 13th, 2011

Call me silly, but when I first ran across free knitting patterns with “Top Down” in the title, I wasn’t sure exactly what that meant.  How could a sweater have its top down?  Thankfully, with just a little Googling, I found the answer.  Top Down patterns are simply projects that are knit starting from the top down, instead of starting at the bottom up.  Makes sense, right?  As it turns out, this method of sweater knitting has its advantages, the biggest being that you can easily try on your sweater while you’re knitting it.  This means you’ll be able to make size adjustments as you go to ensure your sweater is a perfect fit!

If you have yet to try knitting a top down sweater, you should definitely check out Toddler Raglan Hoodie featured on our sister site, AllFreeKnitting.

Isn’t this sweater great?  If you ask me, you can never have too many hoodies!  They’re comfy, cozy and a great project for an advanced beginner.  If you don’t have the right combination of yarn in your stash, we have tons of yarn to choose from.  If you love the pictured version, here are similar colors on CutRateCrafts:

If you’ve never made your own sweater before, I feel that I should warn you – it’s incredibly addictive.  Chances are once you make one sweater, you’ll soon find yourself starting 3 more and plotting how many you’d like to make before next Christmas.  Please know, you are not alone!  I’m currently working my way through this lovely book:

Have you ever knit a top down sweater before?  Any great tips or advice to share?

February’s Favorite Sewing Scrap Buster

Friday, April 1st, 2011

Scrappy Needle Case Februarys Favorite Sewing Scrap Buster FaveCrafts readers loved the shabby chic Scrappy Needle Keeper from Patchwork Posse, and I know you will too! If you’re not already hoarding color-coordinated scraps to make your own needle case, start today! The beauty of this project is that it’s made almost entirely from leftovers. With an old sheet, tablecloth, or even a bit of muslin, you create the base for the patchwork cover, and a few, small squares of felt “keep” the needles inside the case. The cover is made entirely from fabric scraps of any shape or size. This project is great for experimentation; you can easily use larger scraps, as shown, or you can try tons of tiny scraps for a more variegated effect. If you want to take the pattern one step further, try cutting the scraps into interesting shapes like patchwork squares or polka dots! But truthfully, I think the simplistic beauty of this project lies in the haphazard combination of fabric pieces you don’t have to measure and trim.

While the colors and shapes of the patchwork cover come together organically out of the materials you already have in your stash, the button closure is something you might have to pick out at a craft store. The button and loop should match with the rest of the fabrics and pull the whole project together. If you’re making a Scrappy Needle Keeper with a similar color scheme to the sample, try a Wrights Single Fold Bias Tape in cool Mediterranean. Of course, if you’re using a different color scheme, Wrights tapes come in literally dozens of other colors. I especially like Spice and Sea Glass.

And don’t forget to pick out a great button! Any old spare button will leave this needle keeper in the doldrums. Take a cue from Patchwork Posse and choose a novelty button that will add a bit of sweetness. A package of assorted buttons in different colors and shapes will give you plenty to pick from. But I have my eye on these turquoise glass bead buttons, which I think will go perfectly with my Sea Glass button loop!
