JanetBasket Eco Bag: The perfect crafting-on-the-go accessory

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

I don’t know if any of you have ever been to a craft conference, but let me tell you, carrying all of your materials around can be a huge hassle, especially when going out of state. You end up bringing not only several finished pieces, but lots of supplies and materials too. Especially working with jewelry, there are a million tiny little pieces floating around a variety of my bags and purses (Although, maybe I should stop carrying beads and wire with me everywhere I go).

I’m sure it’s the same issue for those of you that knit, crochet, or do paper crafts. How is anyone supposed to stay organized carrying all that around? Even if you’re just going to knit or crochet out and about with your friends, it can be cumbersome. That’s why I’m a huge fan of this large JanetBasket Eco bag.

It’s like a duffel bag for all my crafting supplies, except better. The JanetBasket Eco Bag has rubber corners so that it keeps it’s shape when you open it – floppy sides sometimes make for difficult to access supplies. It also has lots of pocket space, but I bet you already expected that to be the case. Basically, it’s everything I need to keep my supplies organized when I’m on the go. And, on top of everything, it comes in this adorable floral print. I no longer have to re-purpose my husband’s stinky gym bag when I travel, which is a very pleasant thing for us and probably the passengers on the plane who sit around me too.

I highly recommend it if you’re in the market for a new carry-it-all.

Or, maybe it’s just me. Do any of you craft outside the home often or ever?

On-the-Go Solutions: The ArtBin Yarn Drum

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

My friend Anne is what I like to call an on-the-go knitter.  On the train to work, outside on a bench during her lunch break, even during our weekly ladies’ lunch — the girl is always knitting!  The funny thing is, I never see her knitting in the comfort of her own home, which I don’t quite understand (to me there’s nothing better than curling up on my couch to knit), but whatever… to each her own I guess.

Anyway, Anne’s birthday is coming up and I was sort of at a loss on what to get her.  Then I found this awesome yarn drum from ArtBin.  It’s the perfect storage solution for the on-the-go knitter and I can totally see Anne toting it around town (it’s super light-weight, with an easy-grip handle AND a shoulder strap!).  She’s going to love that you can fit eight skeins of yarn inside, and that there are handy pockets and pouches for needles, stitch counters, rulers, pattern books and more.  The lid also has an opening so you can easily access your yarn of the moment.  But personally I think the coolest feature of this yarn drum is that its textured PVC base will keep everything inside dry, even if you happen to set it on a wet surface.

I’m not the only one who loves this handy storage solution. Michael Sellick of The Crochet Crowd used to carry all of his supplies in a reusable shopping bag, but after one too many bumpy car rides and one pair of flying scissors, he realized he needed a better solution.  Here he tells you all about why he loves the ArtBin Yarn Drum:

I ended up ordering Anne’s yarn drum at CutRateCrafts for a great price and had it shipped directly to my house.  Gift shopping has never been so easy!

If you’re looking for presents for the knitter in your life, I think this is a  really great buy.  And while I was shopping, I found some other great knitting accessories that I just might have to get for myself!  Check them out:

Lion Brand Yarn Tote Bag

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

I’m forever trying to find a good place to store my fiber art supplies. When I first learned to knit, I inherited a very large basket from my grandmother. As my stash enrichment expeditions became more frequent, it soon became obvious that the basket would not do. Plus, the basket was gigantic — not really something you could tote around. It was summer, and I was 16, so there was no way I was using anything that couldn’t go to the beach. For a long time, I shoved my knitting into whatever plastic bag was on hand or simply tucked it into my purse. We all know what knitting needles do to a plastic bag (by the time I realize how many stitch markers and darning needles I’ve lost through the holes, it looks like a Tasmanian devil tore into it.)

When I was in college, I used a plain canvas tote bag I had on hand, but it was far too deep. I had to empty everything out of it to find the crochet hooks in the dark abyss near the bottom. It also didn’t stand upright, which meant it got lost in the layer of mess on my bedroom floor. After stepping on the bag and cracking a pair of size 11 needles completely in half, I decided it was time for a new yarn tote.

Enter the  Lion Brand Yarn Tote Bag, otherwise known as The Ultimate Knit & Crochet Bag. Although this bag is spacious (18H x 18.25W x 5D inches to be exact), it’s just as wide as it is tall, so there’s no digging around at the bottom of the bag like you’re trying to pull a rabbit out of a hat. It’s also constructed in sturdy canvas with a flat bottom and stiff piping at the seams so that the bag always stays upright. Plus, the main opening closes with a snap, so you don’t have to worry about balls of yarn rolling out even if the bag gets knocked over. Of course, a good yarn tote is never just a tote.

This bag also has multiple pockets with different types of closures to store all your notions. The front pocket has a Velcro closure, which makes it perfect for holding larger items like crochet hooks and mid-size knitting needles. It’s also a great place to keep your patterns or charts so they don’t get mangled inside the bag. Inside the bag, open pockets hold extra knitting needles and scissors. To keep smaller items like stitch markers, tapestry needles, row counters, and point protectors, use the inner zippered pocket for maximum security. This tote has every type of storage you could need short of a tackle box, and it’s much more stylish. The canvas comes in a neutral forest green that looks classic and understated for work, subways, PTA meetings, or anywhere else you might get an itch to stitch.

Useful yarn caddy from Lion Brand

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

If you love to knit and crochet like I do then you probably have yarn hanging out all over the house. That’s why this Lion Brand Pop-up Yarn Caddy is so helpful.

It not only serves as a good storage unit, but it’s also portable. It’s mesh sides make it easy to find what you’re looking for. So you can take it to a knitting circle or just move yourself and your supplies easily throughout the house.

If you already have a storage space for your yarn and just want something portable, this caddy folds up so that you can easily put it away when you’re not using it!

How handy!
