Deal of the Week: Traditional Santa 3-D Felt Applique Kit

Monday, September 17th, 2012

Christmas is a time for nostalgia and homemade charm, not trendy, store-bought decorations. Fill your home with comforting decorations that will remind you of Christmas past. The best way to really personalize your decorations and imbue them with memories is to make them yourself. Our special Deal of the Week, a Traditional Santa 3-D Applique Kit, gives you everything you need to make a classic Christmas decoration. You’ll love it that much more because you made it by hand, and the traditional applique will remind you of the Christmases of your younger years.

I especially love the Traditional Santa 3-D Felt Applique Kit because it reminds me of the felt applique ornaments my mom hand-sewed for our Christmas tree. The chunky, three-dimensional felt gives this Santa decoration a cozy, cartoon-y feel, and the tiny matching sequins that trim each applique give it a bit of sparkle.

The Traditional Santa 3-D Felt Applique Kit comes with all the materials and supplies you need to create the scene shown. All of the felt is stamped, so you know exactly where to place all of the embellishments — no guesswork! You’ll also receive cotton embroidery floss for all of the sewing and embroidery, so you don’t have to find matching threads in the store. Sequins and beads are also provided and organized by color so that you don’t get them mixed up. The kit even comes with needles, so you won’t have to shop for anything! Of course, it also provides trilingual instructions, because you’ll want to recreate the Santa exactly as you see it in the photo.

You can get this Traditional Santa 3-D Felt Applique Kit for only $27.89 this week. That’s a 35% discount and $15.00 off the original price. Joy to the World: The Christmas Crafts Have Come!

Monday, November 14th, 2011

I remember when the Christmas crafts first started trickling in last July. I was still taking my daily walk in the blazing heat on my lunch break and furiously crocheting a star-spangled banner tanktop. Although the most diligent crafters had already begun planning for the holidays, it seemed unlikely that Christmas would ever come! But now I am happy to announce that Christmas is here, in full force. I’ve heard the first carols of the season sung on the radio (and immediately switched them off because I don’t believe in starting Christmas music before Thanksgiving is over), and we’re already making plans for visiting relatives for the holidays. But the most significant sign of Christmas is the profusion of Christmas crafts in our weekly CutRateCrafts e-mail newsletter. When I read through this newsletter, I feel like I’m in Whoville, looking forward to Christmas all year round!

Since I know that we all have our favorite Christmas motifs (angels, Santa Claus, reindeer, snowflakes, candy canes, etc.), I decided to highlight products that feature one of your favorite Christmas characters, Frosty the Snowman! Enjoy!

Handmade Ornaments to Make for Christmas

Monday, October 24th, 2011

As a little girl, I was always reminded of Christmas coming by the lavishly decorated Christmas trees displayed in the Marshall Fields shop windows. But throughout my childhood, one thing puzzled me about those trees: I couldn’t understand why all the ornaments were for sale. Sure the carefully designed trees were beautiful with their matching sets of ornaments and contrasting garlands, but I was confused about how those decorations would fit into the hodgepodge of homemade, handed-down ornaments that I assumed covered every Christmas tree. See, I came from a crafty home where all the ornaments on the Christmas tree were family heirlooms, handmade gifts, and crafty experiments. There were a few store-bought ornaments that had been given as gifts, but most of the ornaments we hung on the tree had stories behind them.

Decorating the Christmas tree was (and still is!) my favorite day of the Christmas season. We set the scene by making hot chocolate with marshmallows and blasting Christmas music throughout the house. My mom would produce boxes of ornaments from some mysterious place in the basement, and as we unpacked and hung each ornament we would remember who made or gifted it. Some of my favorites were the sequined Wizard of Oz characters my mother had sewn as a child and the empty walnut shells my grandmother had painted to look like strawberries. Every year there were a handful of ornaments my mother deemed hideous, but we never got rid of them. We just hung them on the back of the tree facing the wall, as if they still deserved the honor after all their years of service. Our tree was nothing like the glitzy confections we saw in department stores, but it meant something. The ornaments gave me a connection to my family and an appreciation for folk art — a sense of heritage and culture that was uniquely mine.

I’ll soon have a family and a Christmas tree of my own, but none of the ornaments I remember from my childhood. I’m still not planning to buy one of the sets of colored glass spheres or delicate ceramic figurines encrusted in glitter. I’m going to slowly populate my Christmas tree with handmade ornaments so that someday my kids will know that every ornament hanging on our tree was something i spent time on and cared about, so that someday when I pass them on to my children, I’ll be passing on memories and meaning in something tangible. It’s not too late for you to do the same! Start making handmade ornaments today and you’ll already have a nice collection by this Christmas. You can get hundreds of ideas for Christmas ornaments on AllFreeChristmasCrafts.com, or you can make them using craft kits.

This week we have a collection of new beaded Christmas ornament kits on CutRateCrafts.com. Make a set of Christmas fairies or candy canes with your children and then hang the ornaments on the tree as a memory of the experience. Use the wreaths or angels with crosses to teach your family about your faith. Bead a poinsettia or an angel for a dear friend so she will remember your friendship every time she hangs the ornament on her tree.

Year-Round Christmas Crafting: Knit a Santa Hat This September!

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

I’m always amazed at how crafters keep the holiday spirit going all year long.  Before I started working in the craft industry, I’d heard about “Christmas in July” before (mainly because I liked to take advantage of all the great sales at my favorite stores!), but I’d never really understood the trend of crafting year-round for a holiday that only happens once every 365 days in December.  Now that I’m immersed in the crafting world, I totally get it.  Christmas isn’t just a once-a-year holiday; it’s a season, a spirit, and most important of all, it’s a wonderful inspiration for creative crafting!

I’ve also come to realize just how many awesome craft ideas there are for Christmas.  From gift wrap to sweaters, and from cards to ornaments, there’s a bazillion things you can make to celebrate X-Mas!  No wonder people like to start making things for next Christmas starting on December 26th!

Kids Knit Santa Hat Year Round Christmas Crafting: Knit a Santa Hat This September! One of my absolute favorite Christmas crafts is this adorable Kids Knit Santa Hat.  It’s actually currently the most popular Christmas craft over on our sister site, www.AllFreeHolidayCrafts.com, and for good reason!  I love how this hat is festive (the minute you see it you think of all the joy that Christmastime brings), but it isn’t over-the-top Christmas-y.  You could easily wear this cute cap throughout the chilly months as a fun accessory to liven up an otherwise dull Winter wardrobe.

This hat is also super simple to make and ridiculously comfy to wear.  It’s made from alpaca yarn and wool yarn, so it’s going to be your go-to hat when the temperature drops below freezing!

The key to making this hat as festive as possible is choosing the right yarn color.  I just came across the perfect red hue over on 067176 main Year Round Christmas Crafting: Knit a Santa Hat This September! 338934 main Year Round Christmas Crafting: Knit a Santa Hat This September! CutRateCrafts.com.  It’s called “Ranch Red” and it just screams “Santa” with its deep, saturated crimson color.  To offset the boldness of this red yarn, I’d go with a nice, soft white or off-white for the brim and fluffy pom pom.  I really like the look of Bernat’s Alpaca yarn in the color called “Natural”, but if you’re looking for something a little more glam, I think the White Glitter color of Lion Brand’s Wool-Ease yarn would add just the right amount of shimmer.

Now that I’ve started talking about Christmas, I’m starting to get that urge to make some other Christmas crafts.  If you are too, here are a couple of my favorite projects from AllFreeHolidayCrafts.com:
